The ACT Vets travelled to Jindabyne on Saturday 24 July to play the Jindabyne Sore Boars for the Snowy Hydro South Care Cup. The match was another hard fought 9-9 draw with the highlights being the arrival of our club president Pudge and Brumby Jack by the South Care helicopter and another barnstorming try from Wellsy. The match raised $2000 for the George Gregan Foundation and nearly $3000 for the South Care rescue helicopter service, taking the club's total fundraising to over $100,000.
Photos from the matches against HMAS Darwin, Hall Bushed Rangers and Jindabyne Sore Boars are now on the website. Thanks to Lindsay 'Slim' Callaghan and Jason Smith for taking the photos at Jindabyne.
The Annual Dinner has been postponed one week and will now be on Saturday 14 August. The regular fixture match planned for Sunday 1 August has also been moved one week to Sunday 8 August. This will give players the opportunity to have a break, after matches on three consecutive weekends in July.
A date for the second match against ACSC XV has been set and the match will be at Portsea Oval on Sunday 10 October. The only charity match with a date to be determined is the Parliamentary XV match. The fixtures list has been updated to reflect these changes.
Training is every Wednesday evening starting at 1800 and goes for approximately 90 minutes. The training venue is Kapyong Oval, which is across the road from Portsea Oval at RMC Duntroon. The Club recommends that you attend training when you can, for the following reasons:
regular training will improve strength and fitness, lessening the risk of injury
training can improve our skills, so we know what we're doing and can enjoy the game more. Proper technique in scrums, lineouts, rucks and mauls will also reduce the injury risk.
fewer knock-ons from the backs means fewer scrums for the forwards
A training programme is available for those who haven't been able to make it yet on Wednesdays to see what your team mates get up to before having a beer or two. There are also some photos of a training session earlier in the year on the photos page. Thanks to Jayson Hinder for these photos.
You can find us on Facebook. The ACT Veterans Rugby page has information on upcoming events, photo albums and a discussion forum for all things rugby. If you have a Facebook account, click on the link above and put in a request to join the group.
Club bumper stickers are available for a gold coin donation. Please see Craig "Contact" Wilkes on match days if you would like to get one for your car.
The match reports are proving to be a popular addition to the website, with hits on the reports equalling the news, fixtures and photos pages. However, the reports need writing and the committee would like as many club members as possible to contribute. If you would like to put together a report, it should be around 250-500 words and can be humorous or serious, just keep it clean. Please see Craig "Contact" Wilkes or Dave "Tagger" Creagh on match days if you're interested in writing a match report for the website.
