ACT Vets Regular Fixture - Sunday 16 May 2010
Sunday 16 May 2010 was a magnificent day for Rugby with 28 over 35 players and a couple of younger players with fake IDs turning up at one of the best rugby grounds in the ACT, the picturesque Portsea Oval Duntroon to compete in one of the intra club red on blue fixtures.
John “Pudge” Hillier started the proceedings with the normal pre match spiel on the rules. He then kicked off to the red team who exerted their dominance early on with some good strong running by Scott “Truffle” Campey and Gareth “Mustard” Ellem despite some strong defence by “Boxhead”, Ian Jiear, Christian “Chilean Stallion” Fuenzalida and Jayson “AMG” Hinder. The dominance was continued with Troy “Mr October” using his fend to great effect until getting to a well prepared Ray “I don’t have a TV” McInnes who used Troy’s size against him and brought him to ground.
Early in the second half Dave “Tagger” Creagh swept around the back of a breakdown and linked up with “Crusader” Dan Carter and Glen “One Kick, One Run, One Tackle” Croker. Glen put Dave into a half gap with a well-timed inside ball and Dave fended Richard “Gonna Get Ya” Curtin’s attempted tackle to break through the oncoming blue defence and galloped (yes galloped, the Rhino is the fastest galloping animal on the planet, damn it) 60 meters to score next to the posts. His efforts were aided admirably by Dan Carter’s shepherding under the guise of being a support runner. An amused and sympathetic Jack “No Guide Dog Needed” Cunningham blew the whistle for half time saving a seriously out of breath Dave the need to run back onside for the kick off.
Red did not have it entirely their own way with Richard Curtin, playing in the centres, going through some sloppy red defence well set up by the incisive Tarn Morrow to score under the posts. Anthony “Machine” David competed for the ball at every opportunity, “Boxhead” making big meters with every carry of the seed and Mick Trotter devastating close to the break down for the blues.
As usual the club adjourned to the club house, Olims Canberra Hotel, for liquid refreshments subsidised by GMT recruitment and sandwiches provided by Olims. The Better Halves Player of the Day was for the forward pretending to be a back, Dave Creagh and the Guide Dogs for the Blind award was to Mark “Fiddy” Woods as the back pretending to be a forward.
