ACT Vets v Hall Bushed Rangers - Saturday 26 June 2010

On a somewhat chilly Saturday morning a number of the hardier ACT Vets made the pilgrimage for one of our rare “away” games to the Hall Village Sports Ground, home of polo cross and duck pooh.

Despite the bright sun the day was cold and recovering from a large drop of rain the night before, however this did not deter the hardy rugby fanatics from stripping down on the cricket pitch in preparation for the highly anticipated “Bushed Vets Cup” an annual event that sees the ACT Vets getting to hold the only trophy in their non-existent cabinet on a year about basis with funds being raised for Prostate Cancer Awareness. The Hall Bushed Rangers revealed their special pink strip and new corporate sponsorship for the occasion bringing home the awareness of what everyone was there for.

The game was played over the traditional three halves with the first being between the ACT Vets and Wests Leagues Golden Oldies, the second between the Hall Bushed Rangers and Wests with the marquee Vets vs. Bushed Rangers as the last half.
The day saw the much anticipated return of Lloyd “Buddha” Petty and Craig “Woogie” Webber after long absences.

There was some champagne rugby played with some notable performances for the opposition by our own Colin Love who made some incisive runs, despite being hammered by Gareth “Mustard” Ellem. “John O” O’Loughlin, Jayson “AMG” Hinder also had strong games with “Boxhead” contributing some extremely strong runs to the overall go forward of the ACT Vets. Sadly despite having the three best half backs in the club on the field at the same time the Vets lacked any real cohesion in the backs with only a couple of line breaks and a try denied because the outside centre ran more than 20 meters without passing.

In all it was a strongly contested 9 – 9 – 9 draw with Rugby and Prostate Cancer Awareness being the winner.

Thanks to Justin Hyland and the Hall Bushed Rangers for another great day and the away game. We look forward to Fools Day 2011 and the return trip next year.
